Peru-Ecuador 1997

The land of the inca
One of the major surprises that the spanish have had in the moment in which they arrived in Peru was the fact of finding roads which were impossible to find neither in Spain nor in Europe. All of the inca empire was denominated Taahuantinsuyu (the land of the Four Cantons). The big road of the sun is one of the monumental works constructed from men; it crosses through the empire of the north and of the south from Ecuador to Chile. The capitals of the provinces and of the amministrative centres were distributed at regular intervals along these roads. From east to west lied minor roads that connected the capitals of the plateau to the important cities of the coast between valleys and deserts in altitude; it is difficult still today to immagine how such a piece of art had been created and realized. I did once again this journey from Ecuador to Chile through the sunny landscapes, the desrt plains, snowy valleys and meetings with people with burned faces from the sun and from the gelid wind.
